Chloe McFarlane, a volunteer at CPRE London, organised a walking tour of East London’s pocket parks and gardens, taking a group of Londoners from a variety of ethnic backgrounds and ages on a journey to explore green oases off the beaten track.

The walkers were asked to share their experiences of tranquillity in the city by completing a questionnaire. The survey results showed  that whilst everyone had a different perception of urban tranquillity there were common features that made an urban area tranquil; the two highest scoring features were ‘aesthetically pleasing design’ and ‘rich biodiversity’.

The popularity of the pocket park walking tour demonstrated how important well-designed, accessible and tranquil green spaces are to Londoners.
