As part of the discussion on the future of town centres on 15th Jan, Helle Søhol from Gehl Architects presented their answer to revitlising a local area. Søholt said cities that succeeded in attracting people were also successful in attracting business. Giving examples from Melbourne and Barcelona she highlighted how Compact Communities of good density are vital to deliver sustainable and economically vibrant communities, putting people at the centre.
The Commitee also heard from David West of Studio Egret West, who work with various London Boroughs. He shared his vision of evolving town centres that are proactive in addressing change. West gave the example of The New Clapham library in Lambeth which was funded through constructing a mixed-use development with private and affordable residential flats above the library. The site also supports a civic space for the community to use. The Planning Committee will continue their open debate on the Future of Town Centres on 12th March.
