Bromley launches assault on London’s Green Belt

Thursday, 22 October 2015 11:08

Bromley’s plans to build on 17 protected sites is nothing short of an assault on London’s precious green fields, say London campaigners

An area the size of 30 football pitches of protected green space has been lost in Bromley in recent years and now more looks set to be lost CPRE London has warned in its response to Bromley Council’s consultation on its draft Local Plan. [1, 2]

Alice Roberts, Green Spaces Officer at CPRE London, said:

“If the council gets its way, further extensive losses are to follow. We are staggered by this blatant land grab. This is nothing short of an assault on our Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land – land which is afforded the highest level of protection.”

“The sites include playing fields, Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation, ancient woodland, a site of historic importance and, astonishingly – allotments which the council recently promised would be protected.”

“These green fields are specifically protected for all Londoners, not just Bromley residents, so we are objecting on behalf of all Londoners and we are calling on Londoners to register their objections too.”

Alice continued: “London’s protected green fields are under threat like never before. Enough is enough. We are saying to local councils, MPs and the candidates for Mayor of London to halt all building on London’s precious Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land and to call an immediate stop to the give-away of London’s playing fields and recreation grounds.”
