London - Campaign to Protect Rural England

Family Housing: The Power of Concentration

Family Housing: The Power of Concentration

London needs more and better family housing. Londoners may leave the city in huge numbers, often when couples start a family. A look at migration trends shows that over a decade, London can lose large numbers of people to nearby areas. Yet despite this loss, London continues to grow.

This is natural growth, resulting from a younger age profile in a working population. We illustrate how attractive buildings can be provided, with 100 per cent three-bedroom family houses at 50dph (and up to 70dph). This supports local facilities within walking distance and allows space for amenities. This CPRE report is about how to provide good quality homes for families with children in urban areas. This can be done while still making efficient use of land and sustaining local services and amenities.
