New map shows threats to London's Green Belt

New map shows threats to London's Green Belt

Our Threats to London's Green Belt Map is being developed as part of a partnership project with the London Green Belt Council and CPRE branches in Essex, Kent, Beds, Bucks, Berks, Surrey, Herts and London. It shows the threats that we are aware of to London’s Green Belt: by a ‘threat’ we mean that there is a proposal to build on a protected Green Belt site or the Green Belt protection is at risk of being removed. There is a clear mismatch between the government’s commitment to protect our Green Belt and the impact of its policies on the ground. We are calling on the Government to remove the unwarranted pressure being placed on councils to release land for housing, in order to bring an urgent resolution to this problem. Land availability is not at the root of slow house build rates: planning permissions and land supplies are up. The Government's current approach risks destroying our democratic planning system and unnecessarily losing vast swathes of London’s Green Belt.  We are also calling on the Government to use its powers to put an immediate stop to the release of Green Belt land for development. Take Action!

We know that there is no need to build on Green Belt land: brownfield ‘opportunity areas’ in the capital alone could provide 300,000 new homes. PLEASE TAKE ACTION: write to local councillors, MPs, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government or even the Prime Minister to ask them to halt these threats right now. Contact your MP via They Work For You: just put in your postcode, then press the Send a message button.

IT WILL BE MOST EFFECTIVE IF YOU ASK FOR A MEETING. Some suggested wording for letters is set out on the London Green Belt Council website here.

The information in this map is as accurate and up to date as possible. Data comes from Local Authority Green Belt Reviews; Draft Local Plans and adopted Local Plans; planning applications; Local Authority Strategic Housing Market Assessments / Strategic Land Availability Assessments and other sources. The map is not complete as it only shows the threats we know about. It is a constantly changing picture.
